Chocolate Gourami
The Chocolate Gourami (Sphaerichthys osphromenoides) is a charming and unique freshwater fish known for its rich chocolate-brown colouring and peaceful temperament. Native to the slow-moving blackwater streams of Southeast Asia, this delicate species makes an eye-catching addition to a well-maintained, species-focused aquarium.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Typically grows to about 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches) in length, making it a small and manageable species for nano tanks or peaceful community setups.
- Coloration: True to its name, the Chocolate Gourami features a deep brown body accented with pale yellow to golden vertical stripes, often with an iridescent sheen when healthy and settled.
- Fins: Their rounded fins are semi-transparent with delicate patterns, contributing to their understated beauty.
- Shape: The body is oval and laterally compressed, with a slightly pointed snout and small mouth ideal for picking at fine food items.
Behaviour:
- Temperament: Chocolate Gouramis are peaceful, shy, and slow-moving. They do best in calm tanks with similarly non-aggressive tankmates.
- Activity Level: They prefer the middle to upper levels of the tank, often hovering among plants or staying close to shaded areas.
- Community Behaviour: Best kept in groups of 5 or more to help reduce stress. Inappropriate tankmates can lead to reclusive or stressed behaviour.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum of 40 litres (10 gallons) for a small group. A larger, well-planted tank is ideal for long-term health.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F)
- pH: 4.0 to 6.5 (soft, acidic water mimicking blackwater conditions)
- Hardness: 2–4 dGH (very soft water)
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: Use dark sand or fine gravel with lots of plant cover, leaf litter, and driftwood to mimic natural habitats and create gentle hiding spaces.
- Lighting: Low to moderate lighting, with shaded areas from floating plants or overhanging decorations.
- Filtration: A gentle, low-flow filter is essential. Sponge filters are ideal. Maintain excellent water quality with regular water changes of 10–20% weekly.
Diet:
Chocolate Gouramis are omnivorous but have a preference for small, live or frozen foods. A varied diet is key to health:
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and microworms for protein.
- Dry Foods: May accept micro-pellets or finely crushed flakes, but some individuals can be picky. Soaking dry food before feeding helps digestion.
- Vegetable Matter: Include a small amount of algae-based or spirulina-rich foods to round out the diet.
Tankmates:
Because they are sensitive and shy, tankmates must be peaceful and non-competitive:
- Ideal Companions: Small rasboras, ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, and other calm fish from similar water parameters.
- Avoid: Fast, boisterous, or aggressive fish such as barbs, guppies, or large gourami species.
Breeding:
Chocolate Gouramis are mouthbrooders, with the female often taking on the responsibility of carrying the eggs and fry:
- Breeding Setup: Provide very soft, acidic water in a low-stress tank with minimal disturbance and dim lighting.
- Spawning Behaviour: After spawning, the female collects the fertilised eggs in her mouth and incubates them for around 14 days.
- Fry Care: Once released, fry should be fed infusoria or freshly hatched brine shrimp. Keep water quality pristine.
Special Considerations:
- Delicate Species: Chocolate Gouramis are sensitive to water conditions and stress. Acclimate slowly and avoid sudden changes in pH or temperature.
- Best in Species Tanks: Due to their shy nature, they often do best in species-only or very carefully selected community tanks.
